What types of hearing tests do you offer for kids?
Under 3 ½ Years
We generally use behavioural audiometry to test the hearing of children under 3 ½ years. This means we play sounds and observe your child’s response. Children are not required to have any language skills for this type of test. There are two types of behavioural audiometry:
- Type 1. Behavioural Observation Audiometry (BOA): For children under 6 months old. We look for an age-appropriate behavioural response to sounds.
- Type 2. Visual Reinforcement Orientation Audiometry (VROA): For children aged approximately 6 months to 3 ½ years or those with disabilities. This is suitable for children with good neck control. We condition your child to respond when they hear the sounds played. This allows accurate results for the range of frequencies required for normal speech development.
Due to the specialised equipment required for these tests, our Paediatric Audiologist performs behavioural audiometry only at our hearing clinic in Duncraig.
Over the Age of Approximately 5 Years
We can test their hearing in the sound booth and any of our audiologists can perform this test at any of our hearing clinics in Perth or Geraldton.
How much do hearing tests for kids cost?
You can expect to pay $110-$180 for the test.
During this assessment, the audiologist will also review the results with the parent or guardian. They will also offer suggestions on next steps and how to effectively manage your child’s hearing loss.
What are the benefits of hearing tests for kids?
Hearing tests for kids are extremely beneficial as they can help you identify and treat any issues with your child’s hearing as quickly and as efficiently as possible. This can help your child avoid speech and processing concerns down the line or, at the very least, mitigate the worst of these concerns.
Testing your child’s hearing can also:
- Help your child hear noises in ranges that they’ve missed
- Remove uncertainty around possible hearing concerns
- Facilitate better social relationships
- Help you catch other health issues
Sometimes, hearing loss can be a symptom of another issue like earwax impaction or more serious concerns like cardiovascular disease or kidney disease. This test can help address these concerns more quickly and effectively.
How long does it take to complete this test on your child?
These tests can generally be completed fairly quickly, though the exact duration depends on the type of test completed though. That said, in general, tests can take anywhere from 10 minutes to one hour.
What is the process for testing the hearing on the kids?
The process will also depend on your child’s age and the exact test that’s performed.
At the conclusion of the test, our audiologist will go over the results with you and send a copy of the results to your doctor or school if needed. We will offer practical advice on how to improve your child’s hearing if they are experiencing hearing loss and also discuss possible hearing loss treatments if required.
Please be aware that sometimes children can become too tired or distracted to complete a full test. We will always do our best to perform a thorough assessment, but the welfare of your child comes first. If we are unable to obtain full results, we may be able to make recommendations based on the results we have obtained, or we may need to continue testing at a later date.

29 April 2019Helpful and friendly staff.
29 April 2021I have been a client of Hearing & Audiology for about 10 years and in that time have purchased two sets of hearing aids from them. Mostly Gabe has attended to me but so too have Tina and Chantal on occasion. I have experienced only outstanding quality and professional service from all, including Julie at Reception. Gabe always goes the extra mile and his dedication and professionalism is unequivocally commended.

Wonderful, helpful and friendly staff. Everything was explained very well. They’re happy to follow up if need be and the hearing aids have changed my life (and the wife’s as well). Life is much more enjoyable. I can hear the TV better without it being up really loud, and I can keep up with conversations. Thank you 🙏🏻 Ralph
29 October 2023Excellent customer services and great custom made noise-plugs. Amenable to corrections to errors in factory production and was sent a free replacement pair 🙂
